Worm mesh is mostly sliding contact, not pure rolling. That is why industrial wheels are usually phosphor bronze against a hardened steel worm, and why the two parts should be treated as one wear system. How contact pattern develops
When a new worm and wheel start service under correct oil and load, microscopic high spots polish and the load spreads into a stable contact band across the tooth face. That band is unique to the pair: lead, tooth form, mounting CD, and elastic deflection all play a part. After thousands of hours, the worm flanks and the bronze teeth have “worn into” each other.
What happens if you mix old and new
- New wheel + worn worm — the hard worm has a polished or stepped profile that no longer matches a freshly cut bronze tooth. Contact concentrates on edges or bands, bronze wears fast, and bronze dust contaminates oil.
- New worm + worn wheel — the wheel’s hollowed tooth flanks do not support the new thread correctly; scoring and noise return quickly.
- Either mix after a CD shift or wrong shim — pattern walks off the face; heat rises even if tooth counts look right.
Running-in still matters on a matched pair
A matched new set is not “no maintenance on day one.” Use the correct oil grade and viscosity for worm service, avoid shock overload during the first hours, and check temperature and noise. Inspection cues before you order only one part
- Bronze teeth thinned, pitted, or with sharp ridges — wheel is done.
- Worm thread polished to a step, blueing, or pitting — worm is done.
- Metal in oil or on magnetic drain plugs from both materials — assume both.
- Housing still sound — good candidate for matched set + bearings + seals rather than full replace.

Worm thread-milled and wheel hobbed to the same CD, lead, starts, and tooth count, finished as a pair so journals and mesh suit your sample or drawing. When the whole gearbox should go
If bores are oval, the housing is cracked, or CD cannot be held, a matched set alone will not save the unit — step up to full replacement or rebuild assessment.
